How to Make Pizza Rolls

Here are step by step instructions on how you can make these delicious pizza pinwheels:

Prepare the pizza roll dough

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, yeast, and sugar. Add the oil, salt, and half of the water. Knead the dough by hand or using a stand mixer on medium speed with a dough hook until it’s soft and smooth. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour; if it’s too dry then add more water.

Let the pizza roll dough rise

Remove the dough from the bowl and cover the inside of the bowl with a little olive oil. This will prevent the dough from sticking to the bowl during the resting period. Place the dough back into the bowl. Cover the top of the bowl with cling wrap and leave the dough to rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.

Make the Sauce

While the dough is rising, make the sauce. Heat the olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook until it becomes a very light golden brown color. Add the chopped onions and cook until they become translucent.

Season with salt, pepper, sugar, oregano, basil, and chili powder. Cook for 30 seconds before pouring in the passata. Stir well and let the sauce simmer until it’s very thick. You’ll know the sauce is done when it stops splashing (we advise covering half the pot with a lid to minimize the mess). Once done, set aside to cool completely.

Assemble the Pizza Rolls

Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan) and line a baking tray with parchment paper. Sprinkle a bit of flour on a clean surface before rolling out the dough into a large rectangle that’s around ¼ inch in thickness (0.6cm). Spread the cooled sauce evenly across the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Sprinkle the cheese and any toppings over the sauce.

Roll and Slice the Pizza Rolls

Starting from one long edge, carefully roll the dough into a tight tube. Use a sharp knife to slice the tube into equal pieces. Place the rolls on the prepared baking tray, leaving enough space between them because they’ll expand in the oven

Bake and serve the pizza rolls

Bake the pizza rolls for around 20 minutes, or until they start to brown. Remove the tray from the oven, add more cheese on top of the rolls, and place them back in the oven until the cheese melts (around 2 -3 minutes).

Pizza roll variations

You can customize these pizza pinwheels to suit your preferences by experimenting with different toppings like:

  • Sautéed mushrooms
  • Bell peppers
  • Olives
  • Caramelized onions
  • Spinach
  • Meat-free “pepperoni” or “sausage”
  • Other types of cheese like mozzarella

How to store and reheat pizza rolls

To store leftover pizza rolls, let them cool completely, then transfer them to an airtight container. They can be stored in the refrigerator for around three days.

To reheat, place the pizza rolls on a microwave-safe plate and microwave for 30-60 seconds, or until heated through. Alternatively, you can reheat them in a preheated oven at 180°C (160°C fan) for 5-7 minutes, or until heated through and the cheese is melted.

Serving Suggestions

While these vegetarian pizza rolls are delicious on their own, you can enhance the flavor by serving them with a variety of sides, dips, or sauces. Here are some suggestions:

  • Marinara sauce: A classic choice that complements the pizza flavors perfectly. You can make extra sauce from this recipe and use it as a dip.
  • Pesto sauce: A refreshing and herby alternative that pairs well with pizza rolls, especially with vegetable toppings.
  • Garlic and herb dip: Just like the ones you get with takeout pizzas.
  • Ranch dressing: A popular choice for dipping that adds a tangy and creamy contrast to the pizza rolls.
  • Green salad: Serve a simple green salad with a light vinaigrette on the side to add some freshness and balance.
  • Vegetable sticks: Accompany the pizza rolls with crunchy, raw vegetables like carrot, celery, and bell pepper sticks for a healthy and colorful addition.

Tips for Success

To ensure the best results when making pizza rolls, keep these tips in mind:

  • Yeast choice: Use instant yeast or active dry yeast for the best results. Make sure the yeast isn’t expired, as this can affect the dough’s rise.
  • Dough thickness: When rolling out the dough, aim for a thickness of about 1/4 inch (0.6 cm). This will allow the dough to cook evenly and maintain a soft, fluffy texture.
  • Baking time and temperature: Keep an eye on the pizza rolls while they bake to avoid overcooking. The baking time may vary depending on your oven and the thickness of the dough. The rolls should be golden brown and the cheese melted when they’re done.
  • Allow the sauce to cool: Make sure the sauce is completely cool before spreading it onto the dough. This will prevent the dough from getting soggy.
  • Don’t overfill: Avoid overloading the dough with sauce and toppings, as this can make it difficult to roll and slice, and may result in soggy pizza rolls due to excess moisture.
  • Space the rolls: When placing the rolls on the baking tray, leave enough space between them to allow for expansion during baking. This will ensure that they cook evenly and maintain their shape.
