Ingredients needed to make chocolate glazed donuts

Here’s the ingredients you need to make these donuts and a short explanation of what each one does:

  • Plain Flour: This is what gives our donut its body and structure.
  • Sugar: Adds sweetness to the donuts and gives them a gorgeous golden brown color when baked.
  • Baking Powder: This helps the donuts rise and become fluffy.
  • Salt: Brings out the flavors and balances the sweetness.
  • Cardamom Powder: This gives the donuts a lovely taste. You can use vanilla instead if you wish.
  • Sparkling water: This makes the donuts light and fluffy. It serves as an egg replacer.
  • Sunflower oil: This keeps the donuts soft and moist.
  • Vegan dark chocolate (melted): For the irresistible glaze

How to make vegan chocolate glazed donuts

Warm Up Your Oven

Firstly, preheat your oven. Set it to 180°C (or 160°C if it’s a fan oven). Preheating is vital because it will be at the right temperature when it’s time to bake.

Prepare your donut tray

Before you start with the batter, lightly grease your donut tray with some oil. Doing this means the donuts don’t stick and easier to remove from the tray.

Make the donut batter

In a bowl, sift and mix your dry ingredients together and make a well in the center. Then, mix the wet ingredients together in a jug and pour the liquid into the dry mixture. Whisk gently to make your donut batter. Stop mixing as soon as a smooth batter forms.

After your batter is ready, spoon or pipe it into each donut mould around three quarters of the way.

Bake the Donuts

After filling the moulds, subsequently place the tray in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes. You’ll know the donuts cooked when they turn a beautiful golden-brown color.

Check the Donuts

To make sure the donuts are baked, check them with a skewer. If it comes out clean, your donuts ready. If there’s batter on the skewer, they need a few more minutes in the oven.

Let the Donuts Cool

Once the donuts are ready, take them out of the oven. Let them cool in the tray for about 5 minutes – this helps them firm up a bit, making them easier to take them out. After that, move the donuts to a wire rack to cool down completely.

Melt the chocolate

To melt the chocolate, you can use a microwave or bain marie. If you’re using a microwave, chop the chocolate and put it in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat it for 20 seconds at a time, stirring after each interval until smooth.

For bain marie, put the chopped chocolate in a bowl, and place it on a pan of simmering water and stir until it’s melted and smooth.

Dip the donuts in chocolate

Now for the fun part! Once your donuts are completely cooled, you can dip the tops into your melted chocolate. Wait a bit for the chocolate to set before you dig in. It might be a few minutes, but it’s worth the wait.

Can I use tap water instead of sparkling water?

We recommend using carbonated water because the bubbles in the sparkling water make the donuts fluffy and light.

How long can I keep chocolate glazed donuts?

You can keep them in an airtight container at room temperature for a couple of days, or in the fridge for around a week.
